Symptoms & Conditions
Breast reduction surgery, otherwise known as mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of large breasts. This procedure reduces the volume of the breast, balancing your body’s proportion and reducing the health problems associated with overly large breasts.
Being unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts can have a significant impact on self-confidence and body image and therefore a breast reduction is often advised to resolve issues such as:
-
Nerve pain
-
Uneven breasts
-
Skin infections, chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
-
Restricted activity
-
Premature sagging
-
Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
-
Posture problems
-
Discomfort and indention from bra straps
-
Chafing
-
Difficulty fitting into bras and clothing
-
Poor self-image related to large breasts
-
Restricted sports participation and exercise
Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic meaning that that you will spend approximately two nights in hospital.
Every surgeon will have a preferred technique, however, the basics of breast reduction involve removing excess breast tissue, reshaping your breasts and repositioning your nipples which will enhance their ‘pert’ appearance.
During the consultation, your surgeon will discuss the process and technique involved. They will also be able to show you where the incisions will be made.
Recovery after breast reduction can vary but as a general rule, full recovery can take anywhere between two to six weeks. We recommend that you resume normal day-to-day activities after about two weeks. It is very important to rest during this time and limit any movement that requires lifting your elbows above your shoulders.
FAQs
What is involved in the surgery?
During the procedure, a surgeon makes incisions in the breasts to remove excess tissue and skin and moves the nipples to a new position. The surgery is performed under general aesthetic and takes around 2-3 hours.
What can I expect after the surgery?
You can expect to experience pain, swelling, bruising and tightness in the chest area. These symptoms should subside within a few days to a week.
How much can my breasts be reduced?
The amount your breasts can be reduced depends on your frame, breast shape, and chest size. Your surgeons can't guarantee a specific cup size, but they can suggest a surgery plan to achieve the results you want.
What are the risks and side effects?
A significant reduction can alter the shape and look of your breasts. There will be scarring and possibly lost or altered nipple sensation. Your breasts can also change in size and shape after surgery and you may not be able to breast feed.
